Noli Me Tangere: the visual novel
Live through Noli Me Tangere like Ibarra would!
----------- Description -----------
This game was created in partial fulfillment of "The Life and Works of Rizal." This Integration project aims to share Rizal's work with the youth of the Philippines in a fun and engaging way.
Our team of devs summarized the story of Noli Me Tangere into 5 of it's most major events (plus a bonus chapter) and then turned the event into a visual novel-style game. The assets were done in aseprite, a pixel art software. The engine used was Ren'py which is a visual novel coding engine.
Jose Rizal's teachings in Noli Me Tangere are a powerful critique of the social, political, and religious oppression in the Philippines under Spanish colonial rule. Through the story, he exposes the injustices suffered by Filipinos, particularly the abuses of power by corrupt friars and government officials, and emphasizes the need for reform and national identity. Learning about this message is important because it highlights the historical roots of Filipino nationalism, teaches the value of standing against oppression, and encourages awareness of how colonialism shaped Filipino society, fostering a sense of identity and pride in the country's struggle for independence.
Our devs wanted to turn the story into a Visual Novel game so that students can have a way to experience and understand the story and its impactful message in a "bite-sized" and fun package.

Fantastic pixel art and good story. I'm going to read the original Noli Me Tangere now!
